ADHD and co-occurring conditions

ADHD rarely travels alone. Around two-thirds of adults with ADHD have at least one other condition, and many have several. Recognising co-occurrence matters because it shapes both diagnosis and treatment.

Conditions that often appear alongside ADHD

  • Anxiety and depression, which can mask or mimic ADHD inattention.
  • Autism, with overlap that often warrants separate assessment.
  • Specific learning differences such as dyslexia and dyscalculia.
  • Sleep disorders, including delayed sleep phase and insomnia.
  • Substance misuse, sometimes used to self-regulate symptoms.
  • Tic disorders and Tourette’s syndrome, particularly in younger people.

Our assessment considers your wider mental health picture, your developmental history, and your current functioning. Where another condition is likely the better explanation, your clinician will say so. Where conditions co-occur, your written report will signpost appropriate next steps for each.

Lighthouse Pathways currently offers ADHD assessment only. We will refer or signpost to trusted services for autism, learning differences, or other neurodevelopmental conditions when relevant.
