Can children and young people start ADHD medication through Lighthouse Pathways?

What you need to know about ADHD medication for children and young people

Medication may be discussed following a child ADHD assessment, but only where it is clinically appropriate and where the necessary clinical, governance and safeguarding requirements are met.

Medication is never automatically offered or guaranteed following a diagnosis.

What is required before prescribing can be considered

  • Relevant medical and developmental history
  • GP information and communication
  • Baseline physical health checks
  • Confirmation that the clinical, governance and safeguarding requirements for prescribing to a child or young person are satisfied

When medication may not be recommended

For some young people, the most appropriate first recommendation may be behavioural, educational or psychological support rather than medication. This depends on age, presentation, clinical judgement and the preferences and circumstances of the young person and their family.

Discuss your questions early

If you have questions about medication for your child, raise these with the clinical team during or after the assessment. We will always explain the reasoning behind any recommendation clearly.
