Private prescription costs explained
If your GP does not take over prescribing under a Shared Care Agreement, you receive your medication on a private prescription. This article explains how the cost works.
Where the cost sits
The medication itself is paid to the pharmacy that dispenses it, not to Lighthouse Pathways. We do not charge a per-prescription administration fee.
What affects cost
- The specific medication and brand.
- The dose.
- The supply length, often one or three months.
- The pharmacy’s own pricing.
How to get a sense of cost
Most major UK pharmacies and several specialist online pharmacies will quote private prices over the phone or by email. If you would like an introduction to pharmacies that work routinely with private ADHD prescriptions, our Customer Support team can signpost you.
Comparing private and NHS costs
On the NHS, an ADHD medication prescription costs the standard prescription charge per item, typically far less than the private cost. This is one of the main reasons people pursue a Shared Care Agreement.
