Side effects: what to expect and when to call us

Most people who take ADHD medication experience some side effects, particularly during titration. Most are mild and manageable. A small number need a quick review.

Common, usually mild

  • Reduced appetite, particularly at lunchtime.
  • Difficulty getting to sleep if the dose is taken late.
  • Mild headache in the first week.
  • Dry mouth, mild stomach upset, or feeling slightly wired.
  • Mood changes, including increased focus paired with reduced flexibility.

Less common, contact us

  • Persistent or severe headache.
  • Significant changes in mood, including low mood or anxiety that does not lift.
  • Heart palpitations, chest pain, or fainting.
  • Tics or unusual movements.

Rare, treat as urgent

  • Severe chest pain, breathing difficulties, or signs of a serious allergic reaction. Call 999.

Practical tips that help

  • Take medication early in the day to protect sleep.
  • Eat a substantial breakfast before taking your dose.
  • Hydrate well.
  • Track your experience daily during titration.
