Working with schools after diagnosis
Once your child is diagnosed, school becomes a key partner. The aim is shared understanding and practical adjustments, delivered in a way that works for your child.
Who to contact
Start with your child’s class teacher or form tutor, then the special educational needs coordinator (SENCO). The SENCO is the central point for SEND support across the school.
What to share
You do not have to share the full report. A summary letter that covers the diagnosis and recommended adjustments is often enough. We can help you draft this if useful.
What support school can offer
- In-class adjustments such as movement breaks, clearer instructions, and visual schedules.
- Assessment for an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) where additional support is needed.
- Exam access arrangements such as extra time, a separate room, or rest breaks.
- Access to school-based emotional support.
If progress stalls
If support is not forthcoming, request a SEND meeting, contact your local authority’s SEND team, or seek advice from organisations such as IPSEA or SOSSEN.
